In XUFU Original it is twenty milligrams of black pepper extract, standardised to ninety-five per cent piperine. Piper nigrum to the botanists, pepper to everyone else, and the same berry whether it ends up black, white or green.
A spice worth a ransom
Pepper grows on a climbing vine native to the Malabar Coast, in what is now Kerala. It travelled early and far. Peppercorns were found packed into the nostrils of Ramesses II when his mummy was studied. Rome imported it by the shipload, and when Alaric's Goths besieged the city in 408 they asked for three thousand pounds of it as part of the price of leaving. In England it was once valuable enough to pay rent with. The peppercorn rent survives in property law as a token sum, long after the pepper stopped being worth anything much.
A crystal, then a mechanism
In 1819 Hans Christian Ørsted, better known for electricity and magnetism, drew a yellowish crystal out of pepper and named it piperine. It is what makes pepper hot. The more useful discovery came much later. Piperine slows some of the enzymes in the gut wall and liver whose job is to clear things out of the body before they reach the blood. In 1998 a small study in India gave volunteers turmeric's curcumin, which the body usually clears almost at once, with and without twenty milligrams of piperine. With it, far more curcumin reached the blood.
Piperaceae, the pepper family. The active is piperine, the alkaloid behind the heat. Because it slows how the body clears some compounds, it can do the same to some medicines. If you take prescription medicine, ask a pharmacist or your doctor before taking XUFU Original.
Why it is in XUFU Original
It is there for the other eight. Twenty milligrams is the amount that 1998 study used, and it is enough to matter without adding heat. We should be plain about the evidence: the absorption studies were done with curcumin and a handful of other compounds, not with this blend. We include it because the mechanism is well understood and the dose is modest, and we say so rather than promise more.
This journal will keep one plate at a time. History first. The formula second. Claims last, and only the ones we can stand behind.
